If you haven't already picked up a copy of Amy Poehler's Yes Please, it is a must read. It's touching and wise wrapped in a bundle of funny. A little late to the game, I dove into the book this weekend and found super unexpected but completely sensical career advice. An angle I certainly had never heard before.

This gist: Treat your career like a bad boyfriend. Sounds a little silly and like a terrible idea for us career-oriented gals. But let Ms. Poehler explain:

"Ambivalence is key. You have to care about your work but not the result. You have to care about how good you are and how good you feel, but not about how good people think you are or how good people think you look."

She goes on to write,

"Remember, your career is a bad boyfriend. It likes it when you don't depend on it. It will reward you every time you don't act needy. It will chase you if you act like other things (passion, friendship, family, longevity) are more important to you. If your career is a bad boyfriend, it is healthy to remember you can always leave and go sleep with somebody else."

See? Not silly at all. In fact, it sounds like a pretty good tactic to maintain balance and prioritize in life, don't you think?
