7 Easy Steps to a Productive Work Day

Not feeling it at work today? No sweat – we've got you covered with these 8 easy steps to getting through your day. Read through our tips on how to stay awake and focused, even when you're not feeling your best or most attentive, and especially when you're not feeling your most productive.

  • Step 1. Take a quick break outside. Take a brisk walk outside to stretch your legs and give your brain a break. C'mon, admit it; no one's at their best when they're behind a screen all day long. Studies show that even just 15-minute bouts of exercise at a time can increase brain function.

  • Step 2. Cut down on constant screen time. Look away from the screen from time to time. And yes, that means your phone too! Give your eyes a rest from the habit of constant screen time that society's drilled into us. We'd recommend at least a 20-second break, around every 5-10 minutes to avoid irritation, exhaustion and headaches post-work.

  • Step 3. Write down notes or ideas. Keep a notebook with you at your work space at all times; you never know when you'll be inspired! Plus, I've found that the act of physically writing down thoughts and ideas helps to spark creativity in and of itself.

  • Step 4. Juggle tasks in order of priority. When you prioritize what you need to take care of, chances are you'll be able to achieve the important tasks first and foremost; and what could lead to a productive and accomplished feeling more than that? (In all honesty, I'm just a sucker for checking things off the good ol' to-do list.)

  • Step 5. Turn on music. Curate a playlist of songs that aren't too distracting, but help keep you motivated to stay on-point in the workplace. Experts say that listening to music can even increase your productivity and concentration levels.

  • Step 6. Get up and grab a glass of water. Not only will the motion of getting up and walking help, but staying hydrated is essential to pretty much everything, much less being productive. Duh. This should be a no-brainer by now.

  • Step 7. If all else fails, stretch. Do some yoga poses at your desk. We swear, these aren't too obvi, but some of your nosier coworkers might look at you a little weird. That's okay; your body will thank you for it.

  • Step 8. At the end of the day, plan what you'll work on tomorrow. Spend at least 10 minutes at the end of your work day to sketch out a plan or create a to-do list for what you'll work on the next day. That way, when boredom and restlessness rear their ugly heads, you'll be ready.
