Trend to Try: Rash Guards

The classic surf style isn't just for wave-catching anymore (although yes, Lea Michele did look adorable in a pink-and-orange number at surf camp last week, and sporty celebs such as Julie Bowen have rocked the look too).

This season, everyone from J. Crew and Cynthia Rowley to Nanette Lepore and Milly turned out long-sleeved swim shirts as a sporty alternative to the standard bikini. Is it good for tanning? No way, José. But the style has plenty of other merits. For one, it protects your chest, shoulders and back from sunburns, which is why porcelain-skinned stars such as Anne Hathaway wear rash guards to the beach. Further, the covered-up design means you're never at risk for losing your top in rough surf (been there, done that).

From the psychedelic prints offered by Mara Hoffman and Zinke, to the skin-saving styles sold by Commando and Tory Burch—both of which offer the equivalent of SPF 50 protection—there's a look for everyone.

So the real question is, would you wear a rash guard at the beach?
