It might seem like Bella Thorne is constantly in the spotlight—whether on the big and small screens, red carpet or the cover of countless magazines, not to mention all over social media—but the accomplished actress actually wants you to turn off technology. Just in time for Earth Day, Thorne is encouraging you to get outdoors by helping the National Park Service celebrate its 100th anniversary. While the starlet isn't shutting off her phone for good, she did offer up some refreshing reasons why we should log off and get out in nature—not to mention hilarious responses to random style questions thrown her way. Find out what happened when we stole five minutes with the in-demand yet surprisingly environmentally-conscious actress.
Why did you want to get involved with the campaign? "Most of the time we spend so much time on social media and on our phones that we don’t realize the beauty around us—me included, okay? Guilty as charged, first thing I do when I wake up is scroll through my Insta feed and my Snapchat. I think that if we paid attention more, that’ll also help us for environmental reasons because the more you pay attention, the more it triggers you to realize what you’re doing: not littering and everything like that. People think that going outside is not fun, but honestly if you go camping with some of your friends, [how isn't] that fun? You can have the most bomb time, and it’ll be awesome."
What are your outdoor beauty essentials? "The mini spray bottle of Evian [two for $14] I think is really great, it just keeps you really refreshed and, I don’t know, sometimes your skin gets so dry and oily, and it’s just not a cute look. Also, I would say Chapstick. I’m a huge Chapstick person. If you want a little color—because who doesn’t?—I would say the Neutrogena Very Berry color stick."
What's your ideal outdoor outfit? "[This] because it’s layered. I have the jacket, which I took off, for when I was cold today. I actually am a big fan of the sports bra; I know some people are like, 'Ew, why are you wearing [just] a sports bra?' But I get hot, so yeah I will wear that."
What's your go-to workout routine? “I’m not trying to maintain my figure; I’m trying to put on weight currently. I did a movie [Perfect High on Lifetime] about heroin, and I lost a lot of weight and now everybody’s like, ‘Why’d you get so skinny again?’ When I get back to LA, I’m going to the gym every single day, I’m gonna be eating more and more—you need to constantly eat protein, fatty foods like avocado [and] a bunch of good stuff. It goes in days: my best friend Bella leads legs; I lead abs; [and] Remy, my brother, leads chest, biceps, triceps and back. We do [one] each day of the week, so literally one day you’re just wrecked from legs, then the next one’s abs."
Do you have a go-to karaoke song? "A Lil' Wayne song—it’s gotta be done. I am not a great singer, and I am so nervous; I would never get up and sing in front of everybody. Also, my friends probably would take karaoke too seriously. They would be really, really good and I can’t stand when people do that—it’s supposed to be bad!"
When was the last time you were star-struck? "When I met Christian Bale—American Psycho, one of my favorite movies. He’s so beautiful [and] amazing. His beard in person, oh my goodness, is so scrumptious [and] looks so soft."
Why is style important to you? "I think style says a lot about a person without having to speak. Even if you just watch the day-to-day New York fashion from people just walking on the street, that’s super cool."
Who is your style icon? "Blake Lively, and it’s because everything of hers is tailored so nicely—literally to a T. And if you don’t tailor your clothes right, ooh girl, that is a whole different story."
What's your go-to outfit? "I’m so lazy. My style is so, so basic. I literally wear my black, ripped jeans with my AllSaints leather jacket. I usually wear a white V-neck T-shirt and my AllSaints boots or just Converse. I would have to say not Girl with a Dragon Tattoo because she’s even more punk but her cool, I-don’t-care style—very tomboy mixed with rocker—is my style."
What's your go-to outfit add-on? "My AllSaints leather jacket—it’s easy. I think it looks good with everything. I wear a lot of leather jeans, and so then my mom says, ‘Bella, you’re wearing leather on leather, okay? It looks weird, it’s too much.’ She gets after me all the time, but I still wear it."
What fashion item are you currently lusting after? "I would say a really good pair of tie-up espadrilles—it’s so hard to find them. Also, I just got these new Chanel flats that are uh-may-zing. And they’re like gladiator almost—I like the gladiator look."
What are the oldest and newest items in your closet? "The newest thing in my closet is gonna be my Chanel flats I’m so happy about—you’ll see them on Insta, oh I bet you. I want to wear them to Coachella, but then I feel like that’s probably not a good idea. And the oldest thing in my closet is my mom’s old Versace purse she gave me. It’s vintage and super cute."
What are your packing essentials for Coachella? "You need a fanny pack. I’m always the person that brings a backpack everybody puts their stuff in and that is tiring, let me tell you."
