Celebrate Cinco de Mayo With these Tequila-Filled Cocktails and Mexican Beers

Get your party started with these tequila-based cocktails and Mexican beer recommendations:

Hibiscus Margarita

"We’ve put a spring spin on the classic margarita by creating a simple syrup infused with the tangy floral flavors of hibiscus tea. Not only does this twist harmonize perfectly with the classic margarita flavors, but you are also left with a beautiful fuchsia cocktail perfect for any fiesta."

1 1/4 ounces hibiscus tea

simple syrup

2 ounces silver tequila

1/4 ounce Cointreau

1/2 ounce fresh squeezed lime juice

2 ounces club soda

citrus salt

Measure all ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake for 10 seconds, then strain mixture into a margarita glass. Top with club soda. Serve over ice in glass rimmed with citrus salt.

To make the hibiscus tea simple syrup, combine 3/4 of a cup of loose hibiscus tea leaves, 3 cups of water, and 1 1/2 cups of agave into a sauce pan and bring up to a simmer until agave has dissolved. Allow syrup to cool slightly, which will also give the tea additional time to steep. Once cooled, pour syrup through a mesh strainer to remove the loose tea. Store in an airtight container. It will keep for several months if kept refrigerated.

Spicy Paloma

"Infusing alcohol on your own is easy and opens up endless opportunities for creating new flavors. One of the most simple and classic infusions uses jalapeños. A spicy tequila is quite versatile when it comes to mixology. Try adding some smoked paprika to the salt before rimming the glass to take this drink to the next level."

2 ounces jalapeño-infused tequila

3 ounces fresh grapefruit juice

1 ounce lime juice

salt

jalapeño

lime

[Alternative: Try mezcal for a less spicy version that's still big on flavor]

In a cocktail shaker with ice, combine tequila, grapefruit juice and lime juice. Shake until cold, then strain into a salt-rimmed collins glass and garnish with a lime wheel and jalapeño slices. 

Endless Summer

1 1/2 ounce tequila

1 1/2 ounce fresh orange juice

1/2 ounce lime juice

1/2 ounce Cointreau

1/2 ounce crème de cassis

In a cocktail shaker with ice, combine all ingredients and shake until frosty and cold. Pour entire shaker contents to a rocks glass. 

Mango Margarita

"The Mango Margarita is one of the most popular variations of this crowd-favorite cocktail. The smooth fruitiness of mango is a delicious addition. We always sip this cocktail on the rocks with a salted rim."

2 ounces blanco tequila

1 ounce Cointreau or triple sec

2 ounces mango juice

2 ounces lime juice

Combine ingredients in an ice filled shaker and shake for 5-10 seconds. Strain into an ice filled rocks glass. 

Cranberry Margarita

"This margarita couldn't be easier to make. The bitterness of the cranberry with the tart lime juice compliments the tequila, resulting delicious and festive flavors."

2 ounces cranberry juice

1 ounce fresh lime juice

1 1/2 ounces blanco tequila

1/2 ounces Cointreau (optional)

1/4 simple syrup or agave syrup

fresh cranberries and lime for garnish

Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Shake until outside of shaker is frosty and cold. Pour into a salt rimmed glass over fresh cubes. Garnish with cranberries and lime wheel. 

Cleanse-a-Rita

"This easy take on a margarita combines one of the most popular cleanse juices with tequila for a drink just under 120 calories. The spicy cayenne pepper and tart lemon complement tequila's bite for balanced beverage you can enjoy guilt-free."

1 1/2 ounces tequila 

2 ounces lemon juice

1 ounce water

1 teaspoon agave syrup

cayenne pepper

salt

lemon

In a cocktail shaker, combine tequila, lemon, water, agave syrup, and small pinch of cayenne pepper with ice. Shake vigorously until cold. Pour into a rocks glass. Garnish with a lemon wedge dusted with salt and cayenne pepper.

Alternative preparation: Use a store-bought lemon cayenne agave juice such as the BluePrint cleanse option, pour 3-4 ounces in a shaker with ice, combine with tequila, and shake until cold. 

Mexican Beers:

"Mexican beer is having a moment, and it's not just because people are preparing for Cinco de Mayo parties. Just a few weeks ago, Forbes reported that Modelo Especial and Tecate Light, two popular Mexican beers, are the fastest-growing beer and fastest-growing low-cal beer in the US respectively."
