Easy Outfit Upgrade: Four Styling Tips to Steal from Milan Fashion Week

Easy Outfit Upgrade: Four Styling Tips from Milan Spring 2015 Fashion Week(Source: ImaxTree)Reflecting on the Milan Spring 2015 shows, many words come to mind. "Sumptuous" and "boho-luxe" are some of them; "accessible" and "applicable to this weekend's wardrobe" are probably not. And yet: among the gossamer gowns, leather hot pants and Jeremy Scott's outrageous Barbie collection for Moschino, there were more than a few easy-peasy styling tricks we can try out right now. Herewith, our favorite outfit upgrades from the catwalks of Milan.

Add a Neck Scarf

Do you own a silky scarf? Good. You're 50 percent of the way towards nailing the simplest styling trick we saw last week. At Just Cavalli, the scarves were long and fluttering; at Gucci, they were knotted Parisian-style. Either way, the classic accessory adds a hefty dose of jet-set chic.

On the runways and on the streets, the most interesting looks are often rife with contrasts. Last week, the opposites-attract motif played out in a bevvy of lace-and-denim ensembles. Alberta Ferretti paired a whispy lace crop top with chambray-blue jeans, while Roberto Cavalli topped a diaphanous prairie skirt with a distressed denim button down. Even Dolce & Gabbana sent out a coquettish black lace top with relaxed-cut baby blues (that yes, were smothered in rhinestones).

We spotted this matchy-matchy look over and over again last week, and we couldn't believe how fresh and modern it felt. You don't need to invest in a new floral purse and dress (as seen at Fendi) to pull it off. Simply match any solid-colored bag to an ensemble of a similar hue (like Ermanno Scervino's pretty green get-up or Philipp Plein's red-hot look) and you're set.

This time of year, we find ourselves schlepping around extra layers to fend off the encroaching autumn chill. What to do with that handy cardigan? Tie it around your torso like the girls at Missoni did, or wrap it around your waist '90s-style, as seen at Sportmax
