When in doubt, go denim. This low-brow style credo has traditionally inspired the go-to look of many a rock star, cowboy, and frat boy, but as jeans gain more and more respect in style-savvy circles (elevated price tags and all), the denim-on-denim look has spread to supermodels, pop stars, and Hollywood actresses.
And why not? When pulled off properly, head-to-toe denim can be a flattering, timeless, casual, and comfortable way to dress. The possibilities are endless. Skinny jeans
with a denim jacket
? Sure. Distressed denim with a faded denim shirt
? Yes, please. Cut-off jean shorts with a jean jacket and denim button-down? Certainly. As pictured above, the key to keeping your head-to-toe jean look working for you (and thereby avoiding the dreaded "Canadian tuxedo" effect) is embracing the fabric's inherent simplicity and wearability. When you wear a lot of denim, you don't need to glam it up with fancy accessories.
A good test is to simply ask yourself, "Would Bruce Springsteen wear this... studded belt/ cowboy hat/ diamond choker?" If the answer is no, the accessory in question is probably not
a good match for your denim 2.0. (In short, save those bedazzled thigh-high boots for another outfit.) You also don't need to show too much skin; remember, jeans are associated with an effortless, practical sense of casual. The moment you try too hard, it's all over.
Here, then, are some head-to-toe denim success stories.Uma Healy
