Nicole Miller Slipping backstage at Nicole Miller's Fall 2011 show was like taking a dip in intergalactic waters: The models may have lacked gills but their slick hair and sleek neoprene vests, leather-streaked leggings and watery silks in oceanic hues seemed ready for underwater action.
In truth, Miller's fall collection was inspired by the 1997 sci-fi flick Gattaca as well as by the minimal aesthetic of its female lead, Uma Thurman. Here angular silhouettes were paired with ruched body-con dresses and blousy trousers; the space travel theme picked up in digital geometric prints evocative of Star Trek. Thoroughly modern boots took the place of flippers.
There was much to love in this collection, which was cheerful despite its foray into the futuristic unknown. What gal won't love Miller's charcoal gray cape or the bit of sequins on a boatneck tunic?
