9 Ways You Should Be More Like Your Dog

Want to be a better human being? Learn from your pup.

My dog is the most important thing in my life. The entire world could burn down tomorrow and as long as I have my Hubbell, it would all be OK. I’d call him the greatest thing to have ever walked this earth, but I know my fellow dog lovers would chastise me and correct me: “Actually, Chatel, MY dog is the greatest thing to have ever walked this earth.” So to avoid a verbal brawl over who has the best dog, let’s agree they’re all spectacular in their own ways.

Not only are all dogs spectacular, but they’re amazing teachers. I realize we don’t often take the time to look into our dogs’ eyes and thank them for the lessons they’ve taught us, but they really do set a high standard when it comes to many things. Want to be a better human being? Then do yourself a favor and be more like your dog. Here’s how:

1. Always trust your instinct.

You, like your dog, have an inner instinct that protects you. However, unlike our dogs, we sometimes totally disregard it because, well, we just do… especially if it involves a hot guy. But if your gut is telling you something isn’t right, then listen to it. No matter how hot that guy is.

2. Love unconditionally without trying to figure out why.

When dogs love, they love without questioning it. They give it a 150 percent and don’t spend their time trying to decipher or complicate things. They just love, love, love and love, love, love. Definitely something we all need to be better at.

3. Learn to forgive even what seems unforgivable.

Forgiveness is one of the hardest things in the world. As a person who holds lifetime-long grudges, the thing that I find most remarkable about my Hubbell is his ability to forgive. If we’re wrestling and I accidentally kick him in the head (it happens when you’re having a proper throwdown, OK?!), he’s just like whatever; it’s cool, and the wrestling match continues. If someone kicked me in the head, the outcome would be different. I’m not saying it would result in a lifetime grudge, but I’d be pissed for a little bit.

4. Stare down the food you want until it’s shared with you.

I mean, I feel like this is just a given and a necessary skill we should all have… and no one pulls it off quite like our dogs.

5. Be a loyal and devoted friend.

There is no loyalty, on the planet, that rivals the loyalty of a dog. Cats should take notes, in my humble opinion.

6. Play, play, play, and play some more.

Because they live in the moment, dogs just want to have fun. All. The. Time. They don’t worry about stuff the way we do, they don’t let themselves get stressed about stupid things, and they just take life as it comes. As long as they’re having a good time, that’s all that matters to them. We should do more of the same.

7. Live completely and totally in the moment.

Unlike humans, dogs have zero concept of time or the fact that our time on this earth is fleeting. Because of this dogs live in the moment, as if every second is their last, because that’s just what they do. Can you imagine how freeing it would be if you did the same?

8. Be aware of the feelings of those around you.

Dogs pick up on how we’re feeling. If you have a dog, you already know that. If you’re sick, depressed, or just having a day from hell, your dog knows it and responds to your feelings. People, on the other hand, are usually too wrapped up in their own world to be bothered with the feelings of others. Even when dogs are wrapped up in having fun, they always take time out of their day to show their support to the ones they love.

9. Let yourself go totally nuts when you see someone you love.

As much as we hate to leave our dogs, one of the best things about doing so is coming home to them and watching them go completely crazy with excitement. You, in turn, go completely nuts too, because your dog’s excitement is contagious. Always let that feeling be contagious and, for the rest of your life, whenever you see someone you love, just let yourself go insane… if you pee on the floor with excitement, as my Hubbell sometimes does when I come home from traveling, then just go with it. There’s no such thing as being too excited.
