The thing we love most about red carpet updos? There's no one right way to style them. With strands that are pulled up, piled up, and pinned up—absolutely anything goes.
Some of our favorites include those that are purposefully rumpled and somewhat mussy. In some cases, the messier, the better.
Take the heavily textured and slightly teased look Cate Blanchett
wore to the 2013 New York Film Critics Circle Awards Ceremony earlier this week. It may appear effortless and DIY at first glance, but if you look a little closer, you'll notice that her hairstylist actually created an incredibly intricate web of hair, elastics, and pins back there.
Whether it's a braid, a twist, or a segmented roll, we can't say for certain. But one thing's for sure—Cate's done-undone 'do is perfectly imperfect. Exactly how it's meant to be.
