Lavi Mirzak of LA-based, print-driven womenswear brand Sam&Lavi shares the love behind this Patek Philippe watch. The stunning timepiece was a wedding present from her husband and business partner, the Sam to her Lavi.
How did this gorgeous watch come into your life? "From my gorgeous husband! It was a piece I always liked, and Sam [Arasteh] thought it would be a perfect wedding gift. It meant a lot to me, because it's such a classic piece: quality, timeless design—and I love simple design. I really believe in less is more. I feel really comfortable in it, I love it, and the fact that he gave it to me means the world to me. Every time I look at it, it reminds me of my husband, and I think, 'He really knows me.'"
Was it a surprise gift? "It was an absolute surprise, I had no idea! [He gave it to me] after our wedding ceremony at the Beverly Hills City Hall. We went to the restaurant, where we had rented out the entire courtyard. We thought we were going to have a casual lunch with our family and it ended up being this beautiful spectacle of flowers everywhere in this beautiful Italian courtyard restaurant, with flower arrangements and wedding cake and champagne. Lots of champagne. It was a very special day. I'm a very simple person, and for me, that day was more special then having a huge ball gown wedding. It was a very special day, I'll never forget it. I remember every single moment."
This watch is just so classic. What do you love about its style? "It reminds me of everything Sam and I have built together, on the foundation of simplicity and quality. It doesn't have any diamonds, it doesn't have a gold strap, it's just a plain leather strap with a rose-gold frame around it. Every time I look at it, it doesn't give me anxiety, like, 'Oh my god, I'm running late.' It reminds me to stop and smell the roses. I love it, I'm always wearing it. If I exercise I'll take it off, because I don't want to sweat in the leather strap, but it's something I love wearing. And I don't really wear much jewelry at all in fact, I just have this and a bracelet. I never wear necklaces or anything except for my watch."
How does this simplicity relate to your designs at Sam&Lavi? "It's an aesthetic that I really resonate with, and Sam and I—also as a brand—really resonate with. We're all about quality fabric, quality aesthetic, a print, a color, that speaks a thousand words. And I usually keep our silhouettes very, very simple, and that's how it's so versatile, and that's why we became popular. I really do extend this personal aesthetic to our brand. I'm very comfortable with it, and I'm sticking to it! It doesn't mean I will never put any beading or embroideries, all in due time."
Where else has this watch been? Have you traveled with it? "Yes, I get a lot of, 'wow.' It's a 'wow' piece. The Japanese are very fond of it! There's this one Japanese distributor we work with, and he's a man of very few words, but every time he sees me at a show, he will always say he's a major fan and gives me major props for wearing this watch. Actually, it's a men's watch. And I really love a men's aesthetic. I love men's design, the simplicity, I love that a man can just wear a shirt and a suit and look amazing. He doesn't have to think about it. He'll have 15 suits and white shirts that are the same cut. And that's what I'm all about; it has to make sense without being so difficult."
When you see it in your jewelry box, what's the first feeling that comes to mind? "I love you! Literally, I do. I just love him so much and he knew how much I loved this piece."
