Here's an update to yesterday's industry-shaking news that Nicolas Ghesquiere, who's helmed the house of Balenciaga for the past 15 years, is stepping down:

- WWD reports that Ghesquiere hasn't been available for comment since the news broke because he's "in Japan for a friend's wedding." That's kind of weird, but okay.

- "We have a short list," said Balenciaga CEO Isabelle Guichot, who indicated that a new creative director would be announced "as soon as we're ready... My biggest interest is to focus the organization, accompany the team and develop the brand potential, so it's in my interest to do it as soon as possible."

- What will Ghesquiere do next? WWD thinks that he "might want to mount a signature brand, an ambition he had stated many times while ensconced at Balenciaga."

- WWD's sources also claim that the following designers are in the running to take the helm at the storied Paris fashion house: Alexander Wang, Joseph Altuzarra, Kostas Murkudis, Bouchra Jarrar, Mary Katrantzou, Christopher Kane, JW Anderson, Thomas Tait, and maybe Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler.

- Here are some ideas of our own we'd like to throw in that hat: Alistair Carr, previously head designer at Balenciaga before departing for Pringle, he's now the creative director at McQ Alexander McQueen; we second the Christopher Kane idea and can totally get behind that—but won't Donatella be mad about losing his touch at Versus? Haider Ackermann sort of fell off the radar after that whole Dior job thing happened, but he's still talented and still well-liked.
