Happiness can seem like it’s a lifetime away, but it's not. Promise.

After a breakup, trying to find happiness again can be tricky. You’re overwhelmed with emotions and you’re not sure how to recover the person you were before not just the breakup, but the relationship itself. And depending on how long that relationship was and how serious, happiness can seem like it’s a lifetime away. But it’s not; I promise.

While you may not be back up to 100 percent happy for awhile, because it does take a long time to heal a broken heart, in the meantime you can take baby steps toward getting there. You can, bit by bit, find happiness after a breakup. You just need to start somewhere and keeping moving forward.

Here are a few ways to find happiness — and yourself — again, after becoming single again.

1. Surround yourself with people who think you’re awesome.

Some people bring us down, while others make us feel like we can conquer the world. You need to surround yourself with those people who make you feel like you can fly, instead of those who are nothing but walking buckets of toxicity. You have enough negativity in your life after a breakup, you don't need more.

2. Reclaim places you love.

One of my favorite things to do after a breakup to feel better is to go to places that I used to go to with my partner. For me, it’s a way of giving those places a new memory and claiming them as my own again. It also makes me feel like I’m actively reclaiming my life in some small way, too.

3. Eat dessert for breakfast.

Nothing in the world makes people happy like dessert, so starting the day off with breakfast is the simplest way to start your day off on the right foot and put a smile on your face. Crème brûlée, anyone?

4. Volunteer at an animal shelter.

Never, ever, underestimate the healing power of animals. Not only dose cuddling with animals warm the heart, but in giving back by helping shelter animals, you get double the happiness. Besides, no one will ever love you like a dog will, even if you're only there a few times a week to walk them and bathe them. 

Even better yet? If you've been thinking about adopting a furry friend, do it now! There's nothing like cuddling with a pet who loves you unconditionally, especially after a breakup.

5. Get lost.

Whether you take a trip to someplace faraway or get in your car and just keep driving, getting lost in your surroundings always feels amazing. It makes you realize how small you are in the universe and how, although you may be hurting now, in the long run it was for the best.

6. Change something in your life that you’ve been meaning to change.

Since a breakup is a big change in itself, take this time to change something else about yourself. Look for a new job, dye your hair hot pink, get your nose pierced, start wearing something besides black everyday – do something that shows you are reinventing yourself and moving forward, as a happier and newer person.

7. Cry. A lot.

While it may seem like crying goes against finding happiness, it really doesn’t. Crying is one of the most therapeutic things you can do. Sure, it will make your face all puffy and your eyes will look like you’ve been smoking weed for days, but the true path to happiness is to cry that person out of your bones. If you fight those tears, you’re doing more harm than good. So cry. Cry. Cry.
