On Wednesday, Michelle Obama
made fashion waves when she greeted Chinese President Hu Jintao for a State Dinner in a vivid red gown by Alexander McQueen
. While most critics seemed impressed by the first lady's high fashion prowess, some—including Oscar de la Renta—are dismayed that she did not wear a dress by a Chinese designer.
In an interview with WWD,
the iconic designer explained, "My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade—American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?"
A worthy point, for sure, but it does sound a bit bitter coming from De la Renta, who once sniped of Obama's ensemble to meet Queen Elizabeth, "You don't go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater."
