5 Tips for Protecting Your Hair from Cold Weather

Winter is coming...for your hair.

5 Tips for Protecting Your Hair from Cold Weather

Unless you live in California where it's still 95 degrees in the shade, you don't have to worry about the sun and chlorine damaging your tresses anymore this year. Summer's over. But that doesn't mean you can forget about protecting your hair from the elements until then. Cold winter weather isn't great for your locks either!

For starters, the cold, dry hair sucks out the moisture and we all know how rough it can be on those really chilly days where a warm (fashionable) hat is a must. To combat these cold weather woes, celeb hairstylist Tara Smith shared her favorite tips with us:

When it comes to avoiding static, it’s all about preserving moisture.

Use natural shampoo & conditioner that’s free from harsh chemicals and won’t strip hair of moisture. The Tara Smith product line is equipped with performance botanicals that actually nourish and treat the hair while cleansing it. Our shampoos are silicone free, which removes the barriers for our performance botanicals to infuse into the hair shaft. You will not believe how your hair will feel – soft and bouncy with natural volume. An added benefit is that you won’t need to use as many styling products and aggressive hot tools when used in conjunction with the Tara Smith Base Coat Serum. This serum is my secret weapon - it tames frizz for 24 hours in extreme humidity and increases shine by 65%!

Also spritz Tara Smith Shining Moment Glosser Spray all over the hair – it’s packed with natural oils and olive squalene to hydrate and smooth the hair shaft. Bonus: it will leave hair with incredible shine. It also provides the mid-day refresher that we all need – smells incredible and fresh with every spray.

In a pinch, rub a dryer sheet over hair to keep static at bay.

Gotta love cheap and easy beauty hacks!

Re-hydrate with a leave-in product.

The cold, dry air depletes hair of moisture – particularly the ends. Revive brittle ends by using a hydrating leave-in product like Tara Smith Base Coat Serum. Coconut oil smoothes and conditions hair without weighing it down, while starflower seed extract helps hydrate and lock in moisture.

Fight hat hair with a volumizing product

Combat ‘hat head’ by applying a volumizing product to hair prior to leaving the house. I suggest the Tara Smith Brilliant Thickening Cream – it’s proven to increase volume by 85%! After removing the hat, apply a bit more to the crown area for added lift.  The greatest benefit of this product is that it is dual purpose – it hydrates and adds volume without being too heavy, sticky or firm.  You will not believe the “big hair” you will achieve in one application!

Use a stimulating shampoo for a dry scalp

Treat a dry scalp with a stimulating shampoo, like Tara Smith Feed the Root, which “wakes up” the hair and scalp. Bamboo extract removes dead skin cells and build-up to promote scalp and hair health, while Tea Tree Oil unclogs and nourishes follicles to create a health environment for hair growth. This is quickly getting a cult like following. The experience in the shower will not only wake your hair up but get you energized for the day!
