Beverly Johnson (PCN)
It’s been almost three decades since model Beverly Johnson
was the first black model to appear on the cover of American Vogue
, helping to forge a path for women of color in the fashion industry.
Johnson, now a seasoned entrepreneur, told us that she is often disappointed by the lack of diversity in the fashion sphere.
“The industry—New York, Paris—we are a bubble, so to speak. And sometimes I feel that we get so wrapped up in our own world that we don’t see what’s going on in the real world, meaning the diversity that is happening globally—the diversity that other industries are recognizing and acknowledging.”
Still, Johnson is optimistic that a shift is in order. As the woman behind a successful wig collection and a line of beauty products for African-American women at Target, Johnson says she’s thrilled to be an active part of that change. Beverly Johnson (Getty)
Johnson admits that her business often makes it difficult to adhere to a strict diet-and-exercise routine. “My daily regimen, it fluctuates. It’s flexible and it changes,” Johnson told us. “I like to get up first thing in the morning and play golf at daybreak. I like to come into the office when I finish and begin my day.”
Johnson lives in the desert, but thanks to the Internet, she still manages to work with her Los Angeles-based personal trainer via Skype. She also says she diets on occasion, but she prefers not to deprive herself of “comfort foods that one needs to recharge the spirit, so to speak.”
When asked how it felt to be one of the 50 Most Beautiful Women over 50
, Johnson insisted, “It’s always great to be acknowledged, and I think reading those kinds of lists really does inspire women and men, makes them think, ‘Hey, if they can do it, I can do it.’ We’re living a lot longer so we might as well look good while we’re here!”Browse pictures of Beverly Johnson (click any thumbnail below):
