Taylor Swift just donated $113,000 to an advocacy group that's fighting for LGBTQ rights in Taylor's adopted home state of Tennessee (she was actually born in Pennsylvania). The singer, who, until recently, has been notoriously mum on her political views, has made her beliefs on the matter known with this generous donation.
(Fun fact: 13 is Taylor's favorite number, which makes the donation amount very intentional and significant to her.)
Her group of choice is the Tennessee Equality Project, who advocates for the rights of LGBTQ people in Tennessee by actively fighting against some of the state's discriminatory bills, such as one that would allow adoption agencies to discriminate against same-sex couples on the basis of religious belief. TEP also provides resources and educational materials for those wanting to get involved, or at the very least gain knowledge on the issues.
While the singer has not made an announcement about the donation herself, TEP's Executive Director Chris Sanders posted a photo of a letter he received along with Taylor's donation.
The letter reads, "I’m writing you to say that I’m so inspired by the work you do, specifically in organizing the recent petition of Tennessee faith leaders standing up against the “slate of hate” in our state legislature. Please convey my heartfelt thanks to them and accept this donation to support the work you and these leaders are doing. I’m so grateful that they’re giving all people a place to worship."
Though her political statements are rare, this is not the first time Taylor has spoken out about LGBTQ rights. In October 2018, she shared the below image and caption on her Instagram.
Clearly, Taylor is passionate about LGBTQ rights — which is great, because we're passionate about it too.
In addition to donating directly to the group, you can support the TEP when you shop on Amazon by going to their Amazon Smile link first before making your purchases. On eligible purchases, 0.5% of the total amount is donated to the group.
